Leo Obstbaum, the design director for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, passed away unexpectedly at his home in August of 2009. Leo’s design leadership and influence are evident throughout Vancouver 2010’s visual identity, including such iconic elements as the mascots, the Look of the Games, the torch designs, the Olympic and Paralympic medals and the podium. I was one of six designers who worked under his direction and this poster is an homage to Leo, which includes all the pieces within our graphic system, and the 3 letter codes of all 52 functions (our clients) at VANOC.
It was extremely difficult to lose our design director 6 months before the games were set to begin (especially with many key design pieces still to be made), but if there was beauty to be found in the situation, it was that we had the opportunity to carry on his vision and make him proud. A short video our team made about Leo can be seen below.
